HOW OFTEN SHOULD I UPDATE MY TRUST?

After years of putting it off you have finally completed an estate plan and done your homework to transfer your assets into your trust. But when, if ever, should you amend these documents?

Generally, it is a good idea to review your estate planning documents every 3-5 years and earlier if a major life event has occurred.

Here are some things that might trigger changes in your estate plan:

·         Death of beneficiary

·         New baby

·         Divorce

·         Death

·         New property

·         Moving to a new state

·         Disability of a beneficiary

·         Wish to change beneficiary or trustee

If one of the above triggering events has occurred you want to be sure that your estate plan still fulfills your wishes in light of this event. If not, an amendment or entirely new documents may be necessary.
